Welcome To Biblical Languages (Greek) – Level 1
Welcome to Biblical Languages (Greek) – Level 1
Learning Koine Greek is one of the most rewarding steps you can take toward engaging deeply with biblical scholarship. Translations are invaluable, but they always involve interpretive choices. By learning to read and write competently in the language of the New Testament, you will encounter Scripture with fresh eyes, gaining insights that no translation can fully capture.
This journey will not be easy—but it is absolutely possible. Like any new language, Koine Greek can feel overwhelming at first. You may worry that the words are not sticking, or that you are failing to grasp the concepts. But take heart: even in those moments, your brain is actively forming new pathways. What feels like struggle is in fact progress. Through consistent practice, those pathways grow stronger, and what once felt unmanageable will, before long, become natural.
Remember this: frustration is normal. Everyone who learns a new language goes through it. But week by week, little by little, you will see things begin to click. You are smart enough. You are capable enough. And you can do this.
The Importance of Daily Practice
The key to mastering a new language is daily engagement. It is far less about how much time you spend in a single sitting and far more about showing up every single day. Just 15–30 minutes of daily practice will build momentum, and over time, you will see steady progress.
Our course is designed around this principle. You will use three different programs, along with weekly grammar lessons. These resources reinforce one another, creating a strong foundation in both vocabulary and grammar.
The course is scheduled to be completed in 20 weeks, but that pace is only a recommendation for full-time students. If it takes you twice as long—or even five times as long—that is perfectly fine. What matters is persistence, not speed.
Your Daily Tools for Success
1. Scripturial App
Your primary tool for daily practice will be the Scripturial App: https://scripturial.com/
This program provides a methodical, step-by-step introduction to Koine Greek. By the end, you will know approximately 200 words. More importantly, you will gain a solid introduction to the mechanics of the language, with audio support to help you hear, read, and internalize it.
-
Recommended pace: 4–5 lessons per day if you wish to complete in 20 weeks.
-
Minimum pace: 2 lessons per day to ensure steady growth.
2. Greek To Me Alphabet Trainer
The next tool is our own Greek To Me Alphabet Trainer, available in the following lesson tab.
Here, you will learn all the Greek letters and their sounds. This usually comes quickly. Once you have mastered the alphabet, daily practice with this tool will no longer be necessary.
3. Greek To Me Vocabulary Acquisition Tool
After the alphabet, you will move on to the Greek To Me Vocabulary Tool, also accessible in the lesson tabs. This program was developed by PaulOfTars.us to raise vocabulary acquisition to a scholarly level.
-
You will learn 1,009 lemmas (a lemma is the dictionary form of a word, the root from which other forms are derived) and 1,486 total words.
-
With this vocabulary, you will be able to understand 95% of the New Testament text in its original language.
-
Recommended pace: 50 words per week, taught in order of frequency of use, with the most common words introduced first.
Weekly Grammar Lessons
In addition to daily practice in the apps, you will also progress through weekly grammar lessons. These lessons will deepen your understanding of the structure and nuances of Koine Greek, complementing the vocabulary and reinforcing your ability to read fluently.
A Final Word of Encouragement
You are beginning a journey that will stretch your mind and strengthen your scholarship. At times, you may feel that it is too much. But remember: you can do hard things. The path of learning Koine Greek is not only possible—it is profoundly rewarding.
The skill you are building will last a lifetime, opening the Scriptures in ways that will enrich both your faith and your scholarship. Stay committed, practice daily, and trust the process. In time, what once felt overwhelming will become a natural part of your thinking.
You are capable. You will succeed. And the reward will be worth every step of the journey.
